SCHOFIELD, Wis. (WAOW)-- Law enforcement is seeing an uptick in catalytic converter thefts in Central Wisconsin.

Everest Metro Police Department reported a recent catalytic converter theft happening during the day. They said they haven't seen a lot of thefts lately, but they hope it isn't the start of a new trend.

Police said a woman parked her car at her home and noticed something was off a couple of hours later when she got back in. Though they do investigate the thefts, police said it can be difficult to nail down suspects if there are no witnesses.

"Criminals are opportunists. They will try to steal things that are quick and easy for them. The catalytic converters right now have high value in the scrap markets," said Captain John Rusinek of the Everest Metro Police Department.

Rusinek said if you can, avoid parking on the street but if you do, try to park near streetlights. If parking outside overnight, installing cameras can play a role in keeping your property safe.

Police said catalytic converter thefts are a national issue not just local and if your converter is stolen, don't hesitate to call police.
