Eureka Police are investigating the theft of two catalytic converters from vehicles left for repairs at Dobbs Tire and Auto shop, 1299 W. Fifth St. In addition to the thefts of the catalytic converters, which happened on different days, an SUV was damaged and items were stolen from it during one of the incidents, police reported.

Surveillance footage showed someone drive a black Audi SUV onto the shop’s parking lot at about 12:50 a.m. July 26 and stop next to a 2008 Toyota Prius. The driver got out of the SUV, while another man remained inside the Audi and appeared to act as a lookout, the report said.

The driver allegedly could be seen using a jack to raise the Prius before returning to the SUV to get what appeared to be a saw. He then allegedly got under the Prius and emerged about two minutes later before returning to the SUV with the converter and saw, according to the report.

A 73-year-old Eureka woman had left the Prius at the business. The damage from the theft of the catalytic converter was estimated at $2,050, the report said.

Surveillance footage also showed a pair of men arrive at the business in a Honda CRV twice on Aug. 3 and reportedly steal a catalytic converter from a different Prius. They also allegedly damaged an SUV and stole items from that vehicle, Eureka Police reported.

At about 1:05 a.m., the men reportedly could be seen arriving in the CRV on the parking lot and stopping near a 2006 Toyota Prius that belongs to a 33-year-old Pacific man. Two men got out of the CRV, walked around the Prius and about two minutes later returned to the SUV with what appeared to be the converter. The damage to the Prius was estimated at about $1,000, Eureka Police reported.

Then, the CRV allegedly could be seen returning to the business with its headlights off at about 1:40 a.m. and stopping near a 2002 Ford Excursion owned by a 42-year-old Dittmer man. The suspects then get out of the CRV and appeared to enter the Excursion before exiting it about four minutes later with items in their hands, according to the report.

Police discovered the Excursion’s steering wheel had been removed from the steering column, and a Dobbs employee said electronics from the SUV’s dashboard were missing. The damage to the Excursion was estimated at about $1,000. As of Aug. 15, the owner of the Excursion had not reported what was stolen from it, Eureka Police said.

Lt. Michael Tapp said it is not known if the two incidents at Dobbs are related, but Kirkwood, Manchester, Crestwood and St. Charles County police reported that the CRV was believed to have been involved in crimes during the overnight hours between Aug. 2 and Aug. 3, the report said.

As of Aug. 15, neither of the converters nor the items stolen from the SUV had been recovered, and no suspects had been identified, Tapp said. Anyone with information about the incidents should call Eureka Police at 636-938-6600.
